We are supporting the Jenin Public Hospital with £1000 to help alleviate the poor conditions faced by patients who use this hospital.

Mirya, who is a member of the NottmJenin group and currently staying in Jenin has worked with Yousef ( you may remember him from the visit to Nottingham last November ) to set this up. Here is some information sent to us from Mirya about the Jenin Public Hospital. We hope to have more detailed information soon, hopefully some photos in time for the Nottingham Garden Party for Palestine on Sunday 16th Sept – see attached flyer.

If you work in the health sector and think you can support this project either through fundraising or making contact with workers at the Jenin Public Hospital please let us know.

Dear Everyone, It is the governmental hospital in Jenin, for the public who doesn't have money to go to private hospitals run by NGO's like the Al-Amal Hospital. (which I mentioned in my blog) They have 123 beds for the population of 350.000 people (the whole Jenin District including villages). According to WHO they should have 350 beds at least to cover the need. The Palestinian Statistics Institute has estimated that the health conditions in the Jenin Area is the poorest in the whole Palestine, including Gaza.

It is a general hospital with a general surgery and they don't have any special clinics. For special treatments the patients have to be sent to the public hospital in Nablus, Ramallah or Jerusalem, and you can imagine all the problems

with checkpoints and the bad condition of the roads. This is of course also a problem when they are going to Jenin hospital, especially at night and for the citizens in the villages. Among other things the hospital don't have any scanners and the patients have to go to Nablus do have the scanning done there. It can take 1 and a half month or more to get an appointment. They only have one ambulance, which has been destroyed by tanks at one point, and because of that it needs to be repaired in average every week. A new ambulance would cost $30 000, so obviously it's nothing NJFG can fund.

The 2 last year has been especially hard economically, due to the european sanctions and the econmical situation in general. The government covers the costs of electricity, cleaning, food and they are ones who pay the salaries. During a period of 6 months there were no salaries paid, they staff started to get paid reguralarly again 2 months ago.

The hospital would need more matressess, pillows, chairs, and sheets, since they need to be replaced sometimes when they have been used by a patient. There are no air condition in the wards and the patients suffers a lot from that since it's really hot here most of the year. In some waiting rooms there don't have enough of chairs so the patients have to stand up and wait.

These are the things our funds ( the1000 pounds) could be used to, which I personally think its a good idea. There is a Jenin Friend's Hospital Society who supports the hospital. Since we can't give the money direct to the hospital (because when the money would go to the ministry of health) we thought we could work with this group to allocate the funds.

Please support the annual fundraising Garden Party for Palestine which is on Sunday 16th September from 1-5pm at 47 Devonshire Road, Sherwood,Nottingham.NG52EW.

There will be live music including jazz, blues from Zacc, world music and singing from Nottingham Clarion Choir as well as a short performance from Al Zaytouna Nottingham Dabke Dance Group. A buffet of Middle Eastern food will be provided.

Money from the sale of Palestinian crafts, plants, olive oil, dates and couscous will go to support the Jenin Public Hospital. There will also be a photographic exhibition of the visit from Jenin last year, information about the twinning links and how you can get involved. ENTRANCE to Garden Party £5.00 on door. Come along to chill and meet your friends. Please see attached flyer IF YOU ARE ABLE please forward the flyer onto other groups you are involved with and/or print some of the flyers and give them to friends.
